MLK Day of Service

Joe, Tim and I (Holly blogging here) volunteered with the Children's Book Bank Monday afternoon.  Joe is required to get involved in a cause he believes in as a part of his social studies class and complete about 20 hours of service.  After doing some research and reflection, he decided literacy was something he felt strongly enough about to get involved and found out about this nonprofit organization.  It was pretty neat that the first time he volunteered with this group it happened to be on Martin Luther King's birthday and this project was a part of a city-wide weekend of service.

Tim and I went along just because, and Tim can't wait to go back.  It was fun to look through the books as we were cleaning them up and repairing them (you had to check each page, remove stickers, erase pencil marks, clean each cover, etc).  Each hour a volunteer spends cleaning up and repairing books equals a backpack of books for a preschooler who otherwise wouldn't have them to take home.  The boys felt pretty proud about what they contributed when we were done.
